What's a good amateur observatory type so I can use my telescope for garden / backyard CCD imaging? I want something reasonably priced (or cheap) quick and easy to build, and I have no interest in becoming a builder or engineer to get it up and running... It needs to be easy to transport and very quick to open and I'd like something strong and weatherproof. It also needs to be open to the sky, so I can share my interest in amateur astronomy with my wife and visiting friends. |
Hi There is a great product available in the UK through Altairastro which is based in Norfolk and they sell the SkyShed POD, which does exactly what you need and details of prices are on there web site www.altairastro.com

How can I become an amateur rose breeder? I know how to raise and fertilize roses, but how can I breed and register roses of my own efforts. Most roses I can buy or tend to are hybrids and anyone who understands genetics knows that breeding hybrids can be a tricky and stunted endeavor. My real question becomes how can I begin breeding roses that I can call my own and not infringe upon some patent or registration. My final goal is that on my wife and my twentieth wedding anniversary I can give her a bouqet of twenty roses I can call by her name.
As I said before, I know how to raise and care for roses, but I'm looking more for the professional or amateur breeder's experience or knowledge or people who might know how to get involved in that game.
Thanks |
| here in tennessee we dont breed them we bud them onto another rose which will produce a rose with 2 different colors and 2 different types you can also put more than 1 bud on a rose you can go up to 5 they are out of this world and expensive to sell after a while 1 rose will start to atke on the color of the rose it is next to and it will turn into a stripped rose i did this with an azela once look up budding on the net from a nursery woman in tennessee |

Amateur photographer looking to start a business. What specs should be a main focus in a new camera? My wife is looking to start becoming a professional photographer. She is starting classes and learning adobe. What camera should we get that will not be obsolete in a few years? And why? Thanks for your input!! |
I don't know, of course, but I assume she's looking at digital cameras?
If so you might want to direct her to the Canon 5D. You can look at the specs here - it's currently running about $3,500 US.
The one thing out of many that makes this camera so good is its full size sensor. By full size I mean the sensor is the same size as a frame of 35mm film and gives wonderful quality.

What is a good camera for an amateur photographer? My wife is wanting a new "good" camera for her birthday. She has a pretty good Sony point and shoot camera, but I think she is wanting something a little better. Can anyone recommend a decently priced camera? Thanks. |
Do you want to stick with a point and shoot, or move up into DSLR?
Olympus has the E-420 with a 14 - 42mm lens for about $450, and Nikon has the D-40 with an 18 - 55mm lens for $500. The extra $50 for the Nikon would be worth it, in my opinion. |
How do you get into amateur gold panning in creeks and rivers? Also is there a good website around where you can find out what rivers and creeks across the US have gold in them? Me and my wife are just looking for a new hobby that we can do while camping :) |

Can I sell amateur porn of me and my wife legitimately,by starting a mail-order company, and selling the DVD's? Me & my wife love to make porn as a hobby. Now we want to sell it .Would we get in trouble with the law?We would be prepared to pay tax and everything.(It would only include ourselves,+ the occasional other consenting adult/s.)We live in London,England by the way. |
| yes you will be OK, with no problems, but you must declare that you are running a small business, for tax reasons, all the best |
What is a good name for a Book written by and an amateur author? I am writing a pretty good sized book. It is about a man named Jonathan Ken. He keeps thinking that some one (some people) is trying to kill his family (his ex wife and daughter.) He doesn't know if he's going crazy or if he is the one who is being wanted dead. |
| Keep writing the title will come. It will just pop into your mind and you will go, "I am glad to see you ." |
How much does a amateur model get paid? My wife and I starting a business that revolves around hosiery, tights, leggings, pantyhose some lingerie ect...
rather then get sued for copyright infringement for stealing pictures... we thought we'd start off small and have out our "leg" models for the web site.
The thing is, what would models expect to be paid for something like this?
Thanks! |
| For a commercial project like this, I would expect to pay a model between $50 and $100 per hour. |
Cooks, amateur or professional: My wife is investing $$$$ in Le Creuset cast iron...? ...cookware....
she is an incredible amateur chef, and she loves them....another $800-$1000 and I will be done!!
Are these things worth what they cost? What make this stuff "all that"?
(Pam Purdue, I need you).... :) |
Le Creuset is really nice stuff, but which is incredibly pricey because it’s so stylish. It’s priced more like a fashion accessory than like a piece of kitchen equipment.
It’s enameled cast iron, which means it has a lot of the great properties of cast iron: it holds heat incredibly well and disperses it very evenly. That makes it just wonderful for stews. Even better, it’s white inside, so you can see your fond developing (for at least some of their products). It can be really hard to develop a proper fond in cast iron because it’s hard to see against the black surface.
Plus, you don’t have to season it. It won’t rust. You can even throw it in the dishwasher. Try that with a Lodge pot. The enamel does chip, but they insist that it’s nearly impossible to wear away enough of it to cause the pot to rust, as long as you treat it with just a little care. (That is, try not to drop it too often.)
But... boy, I can get a half-dozen ordinary cast-iron pots for the price of a single Le Creuset pot. It actually runs roughly the same as the All-Clad, everybody’s favorite stainless steel line, or sometimes even cheaper. It’s certainly prettier than the All-Clad, and for some tasks it does an even better job.
To my mind, the big round ovens are the best deal. They really will do things that nothing else in your kitchen will: hold heat like a cast-iron stove for frying, and hold up even better than the All-Clad for gently cooking stocks. They make them up to 13 quarts, though they don’t seem to make the matching forklift you’ll need to hoist that sucker onto your stove. Still... you spend $200 and you’ve got a pot for life.
I think the skillets are less interesting, and you can do almost as well with other, less expensive items. You don’t always want the heaviness of cast iron in your skillets; sometimes you need something that responds more quickly to temperature changes. And a plain cast iron skillet, while it needs considerably more care, is a LOT cheaper for those times when you do need something that holds heat like cast iron.
But I can see your wife craving them anyway, especially if you’ve ever spent any time chipping food out of a cast iron skillet and too terrified to use soap for fear of stripping the seasoning.
Gotta admit, though... I’d make a lot more crepes if I had something that held heat as evenly as that crepe pan...
The other stuff... well, Le Creuset has a color scheme going, and they’ll sell you everything from teakettles to spatulas to match. I don’t think of my kitchenware as a fashion accessory, so I’ll just get mine without paying the style premium. |
