| HELP!! My guyren (3yrs & 7mths) won't sleep at night!!? I can't believe I have to ask this but I am actually out of ideas. So here's the situation: We live in a 2 bedroom apartment. My two boys (3yrs & 7mths) must share a room. There is a crib & a twin bed in their room and a playpen in our living room. Most nights I put the oldest down first using the same routine we've used his entire life (teeth, diaper, story, music, nightlight, bed). Then I feed my 7mth old his last bottle and place him in his playpen to wind down. Ideally, by the time my 7mth old has fallen asleep, so has my 3yr old and I then transfer the 7mth old to his crib and finally go to sleep myself. (The 7mth old can't stay in the playpen because daddy will wake him up getting ready for work in the morning.) HOWEVER.... my 3yr old WILL NOT go to sleep! I have tried taking him on long days of running errands and playing at the park and even skipping his nap (despite the unbelievably cranky terror he becomes w/o nap)... but even though days like that make ME want to pass out fully dressed on the bed- HE will lie awake playing (*usually* quietly) in his bed for HOURS even thought I KNOW he is tired! If I put the 7mth old in his crib before the 3yr old is asleep, the 7mth old will inevitably be woken by the 3yr old and they will commence happily playing with each other across the room. In some ways I wouldn't see this as a problem except that they get VERY rambunctious & loud after a while- waking us and probably the neighbors. (My 7mth old's favorite thing is to smack his palm on the wall beside his crib that separates our apartment from our neighbors!) I have tried keeping the 3yr old up as late as 12:30am and I've tried getting him up as early as 5am. I've tried putting him to bed AFTER his little brother but he just wakes his little brother up. I've tried laying with him in bed. I've tried laying on the floor of their room. I've tried reading extra stories. I've tried allowing him to watch a video as a wind down before leading into his bedtime routine. NOTHING seems to work! (Okay, 8hrs at Disneyland had him snoring before we left the parking lot, but we certainly can't do THAT every day!) And now here I am at 4:15 in the morning listening to my guyren playing in their beds again and desperately hoping someone out there knows of something I haven't yet tried. Now... that said, I WILL NOT give them any sort of medication (natural or otherwise) to induce them to sleep. So please don't suggest that. As an added bonus to my fun, he will also stubbornly take 2-3 hours to fall asleep for his 1-3hr nap on those days when I've tried to get him to take one. And he needs one most days because when he doesn't get it he is just unbelievably miserable to be around (unprovoked whining, unprovoked crying, instant tantrums, cotton in his ears, mean to other guys, talking back to adults, etc. -all things he keeps to a bare minimum when he's had enough sleep). I usually won't leave him with friends or sitters if he hasn't had a nap. It's cruel and unusual punishment. BUT he will take a nap at my one friend's house without the 3 hour delay he puts me through! All she does is put him on the floor of her guy's room with a blanket & a pillow, then walk out and within 1/2hr he's asleep! (Yes, I've tried it. No luck.) All of this started about 1.5mths ago and just seems to be getting worse. HELP! |
| I think that you should stop trying different approaches and stick to a routine. It may have to be different than what you did in the past but consistency is very comforting to young ones. Also, I know when my guys get over-tired they don't sleep well at night so naps are very important. In your situation it may be best to get a separate routine for each of the guys. Maybe you can start the bedtime routine with one of them at 7:30 and dad can start with the other guy at 8:00. This way they will be put to bed at different times but still have a consistent routine. Also, try doing things in the same order at the same time every night. We do bath, teeth, story, bed time at my house (we even made a little song that gets her excited about bed time). I had horrible sleep problems with my 2 year old for quite a while and the only thing that helped was a routine. I used the Dana Obleman Sleep Sense Program and it helped us a great deal. It helps parents to teach their guyren how to soothe themselves to sleep without 'props' and without making them cry it out. Good luck! |
| Are there any guys out there that HATE babysitting little cousins and/or siblings? Thank goodness I don't have any younger siblings. I am the baby of the family, or used to be before my Aunt and Uncle gave birth to twins a year ago. For the first time, I was forced to babysit due to being grounded. | GRRR...JUDGEMENTAL PEOPLE!!! The ONLY part of this that i find a bit different is the diapering part. That I would NEVER ALLOW IN A MILLION YEARS!! However, there is a lifestyle called "Domestic discipline" There are variations of it. There is the "head of the household" type, there is the "equal oppurtunity" type. It is not an abusive relationship if its agreed upon before its put in place. Some people look for that in a relationship...i happen to be one of them.
